Selfies!

Most of my photography subjects are of every day folks, it’s the favorite part of my job.  A great many of my subjects will often tell me quickly they don’t like having their picture taken. Normally laugh and say “me either.”  It is usually enough to start to put them at ease.  But it is true, I hate having my picture taken! I decided I needed to sack up and take some self portraits.  I decided to make “me” my last subject of 2012.  I approached my portrait similar to how I would approach an assignment I was given.  I wanted to have two finished products …

Nikon CLS & Me

Occasionally, I get frustrated with all the gear I schlep around.  I bring at least six lenses, but Inuse my 35mm most of the time. I have a bag full of triggers/recievers and all the wiring. I’ve started to think that all this gear gets in my way, creatively.  One way I have recently minimized the amount of equipment I break out on a shoot is by using Nikon’s CLS system. I’ve used CLS before, and I liked it. But it can be a hair temperamental.  This is mostly due to the line-of-sight limitations of the sensor. And bright sun light seems to …

I photographed Michael Soriano and Alex Minch for the March issue of San Diego Magazine.  Here are a few of my favorites and a short video of the shoot with Alex.

Fun in the kitchen.

I had a blast photographing Whitney Bond for her food blog www.littleleopardbook.com.  Here are a few of my favorites and a behind the scenes video.  Hope you enjoy.

Officially a California Photographer…

I met up with Tyler Suard to shoot some new promos for him.  It’s hard to make someone look bad in that California beach light. You can check out Tyler’s work on his website at http://www.tylersuardfanclub.com/. Enjoy the images.

Oh Photographers…

About every 3ish months someone posts a blog about how photographers shouldn’t take jobs for “exposure.”  Either the original poster or readers think this is valuable information for students and recent graduates.  It explodes with accolades from the photography community as it makes the rounds on the web.  It normally includes some math which sums up the cost of one image based on the purchase price of all their equipment and software. It’s good that we don’t assign the value of everything on this model, I would hate to know the cost of the keyboard I’m using right now. Here’s the thing. Taking a job because …

Smart Money Shoot

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcE2E1EZxxU] This is a short video of an assignment I did for Smart Money Magazine a few months ago.  I shot it with speedlights, mostly because I was unsure of the office setting that we would be in.  I like the idea of being lite and flexible in the environments. This turned out to be a good decision since we were shooting in a working cube farm, I have no doubt cords would have been in the way.
